Abstract
This paper considers issues critical to ensuring the reliability of automatic
three-dimensional mesh generators. Building on basic concepts from geometric
modeling, consideration is given to (i) the definition and assurance of a valid
finite element mesh, (ii) the use of topological adjacency information to
improve the reliability and efficiency of a meshing process, and (iii) how the
geometric approximations used during the construction of a geometric model must
be explicitly considered if the mesh generator's reliability is to be ensured.
