Chapter 11
Toward Automatic Model Generation

Abstract
This chapter discusses the finite element model building process. Emphasis is placed on the use of geometry-based modeling procedures and identifying the geometric modeling functionalities and data structures needed to support the finite element modeling process. Techniques for the interactive generation of finite element models are presented. The capabilities needed for automatic finite element modeling are then emphasized. The discussion on automated finite element model generation includes a review of the algorithmic approaches for fully automatic mesh generation, an indication of how artificial intelligence can aid finite element modeling and the integration of these techniques with geometric modeling.
