Refining Quadrilateral and Hexahedral Element Meshes

We consider the problem of refining quadrilateral and hexahedral element meshes. For the two-dimensional case we present algorithms that solve the problem. A refinement algorithm foir hexahedral element meshes is given which in some cases produces an unnecesseraly large number of elements. Possible solutions of the problem are indicated, and we conclude with a discussion of the refinement problem for structured meshes.
