Abstract Concepts and techniques for the construction of smooth surfaces over irregular meshes are developed and made concrete by defining continuous splines based on 3-sided patches. These splines extend the B-spline paradigm for the construction of paramnetric piecewise polynomial surfaces to control meshes with non-quadrilateral cells and more or fewer than four cells meeting at a point.
