What is the Hall of Fame?

Brian Gray, or "Pants" as he was affectionately known, was a giant among men. Metaphorically, of course, and physically: he was eight and a half feet tall. His enthusiasm for improv shone through even his Amish beard: he not only served in each of the officer roles in the order that has become a bit traditional (BM, AD, PP), he also brought improv to an entire new hemisphere during a stint in Singapore. He loved discussing scenes, sidecoaching, clever wordplay, inventing games (see: line-up), and wearing a "Gramps- You Da Man" T-shirt with pinstripe pants. Playing 185-pun without Beej is like buying pop from a vending machine with a $5 bill: yeah, you can still do it, but something's changed. Anyway, if you see this affable gent hanging around the Free Booooze Department, ask him to lead a round of Kumala Bee Sting. But be quick, because he might interrupt you.

Scott Dai is to the NPP of his generation as some Asian guy is to an organization that would never have been
the same without him. Scott was known for being, well, unknown. His characters and dialog (not to mention teaching
examples) were as unpredictable and unique as the vending machine delicacy he would dine on at workshop.
His ability to come through in almost any improv situation, not only with technical magnificence but often with the
ever-evasive funny, brings appreciation (if not envy) to many who watch him. Scott served as the Business Manager
before being elected Artistic Director. He was a long-standing member of the Performance Group, taught with the Teaching
Group after the end of his reign, and directed The Carnegie Affair. Oh, and he's really good at math!

As an infamous campus celebrity, the orange kid would be spotted all over
campus flying by on roller blades. ‘Who was this kid?’ most people
thought. NPP fortunately knew this weirdo who found a home in improv.
While Jon Ames was never an artistic director, he will be remembered for
his numerous quirks. Besides radiating bright orange, Jon Ames would
frequently dress in exotic women’s clothing, warm up for shows with
handstands, thrust his legs in the air for slideshow, and often perform his
favorite character: the mad scientist. As the publicity pimp for 2
semesters, Jon Ames created amazing posters in 2002 (although much of it
was on orange paper). For his 20th birthday he convinced President Cohon to
attend an improv show where Gus and Rachel sang a love song to the jolly
balding Carnegie Mellon leader. While his bizarre games ‘Rhyme Rhyme
Revolution’ and ‘Milk Mockery’ probably will never be played again, they
will be remembered for being silly and spazzy, much like Jon Ames himself.

| When Lisa first went to an NPP workshop as an inexperienced
freshman, she didn't. She took one look and backed away, terrified,
until she bumped into her dorm room. But she eventually overcame
her fears, attended a workshop, and went on to serve as NPP's
Publicity Pimp, Business Manager, and Artistic Director (not
all at the same time, of course), starred in The I2K Problem,
and directed Death, Love, & a Mongoose. She hopes to
be remembered for teaching workshops with the fiery passion
of a thousand, um, fires and doing her darndest to cram Stream-of-Consciousness
and Limelight down everyone's throats. Lisa currently holds
the record for the most times playing someone's mom. |

Gus was a cast member in Violators Will Be
Towed, the stage manager of The I2K
Problem, and Business Manager for two years.
Whether you remember him for his frequent portrayal of
Himalayan snow beasts or his love of semi-obscure
Canadian prog-rock bands probably depends on how many
times you had to ride in a car with him. He proudly
accepts responsibility for an entire generation of
NPPers never getting to host Party Quirks. |

Hey! Will just got inducted! It's about time!
Um...would someone else please submit some kindly words for
this hardworking Aussie? I would do it myself, but I tend
to make fun of his downunder upbringing and such remarks could
boomerang and land me in some deep vegemite. Yeah. |

No one has more enthusiasm or tolerance of pain than Nathan.
Known best for always putting himself in the pain position,
he has nearly drowned in Bucket of Pain, held a backbreaking
position for several minutes in Slide Show, skinned his knees
and arms in Countdown, and given his characters such memorable
traits as having no middle ear and no tendons. A cast member
in Violators Will Be Towed and a living example that
persistence pays off in the end, Nathan will never be forgotten
by those who loved him nor those he irritated. In fact, those
two categories are rarely exclusive. |

Adam first came to NPP knowing nothing of improv outside
of occasionally watching an episode of "Who's Line Is It Anyway?"
and, within four years, had gone from learning to questioning
and pestering to teaching. The Assistant Director for The
i2k Problem and Publicity Pimp for two semesters.
He might be missed fondly someday... if he ever leaves.
It has just come to Adam's attention that he is not allowed
to write his own bio for this page. Someone else better write
it soon. |

What can be said about the man, the myth, and the ego that
is Donovan Chase? Perhaps a better question: what cannot be
said about him? The only member of NPP to date to have a new
element of a warmup exercise added in his honor (in Zoom-Schwartz-Pafigliano,
a pass of "Schmooze!" is a pass to Don, overriding to whomever
the focus would normally transfer). Don was Assistant Director
for Improv '98, a cast member in Violators Will
Be Towed, the Vice President of S'n'S, the President of
S'n'S, as well as an inspirational NPP Teaching Group member,
who brought a new energy to workshops and fostered in all
of us "The Love"™. |

One corner of the Unholy Quadrangle, Ayne brought her incredible
improv abillities, sarcasm, and immense musical talent to
NPP for her four years at Carnegie Mellon. Always busy, she
was a cast member of Improv '98, the Musical Director
for Violators Will Be Towed, Director of The i2k
Problem, Business Manager and Board Liaison for NPP, an
Executive Board Member, and a member of the NPP Teaching Group.
Whenever anyone makes an obscure reference to Celtic or Avalonian
mythology, we think of you. |

The first NPP Artistic Director to be called Grand Poobah,
Kat was a strong leader who will be remembered for her vision
and her abundant supply of free Kool-Aid. She was a cast member
of Improv '98 and Director of Violators Will Be
Towed. Kat was voted in to take over the mantle of Artistic
Director during the void of leadership following Spec's absence.
We owe a lot of NPP's strong organizational foundation to
her planning and decisiveness. |

| An (over)active member of NPP for both of his years at
Carnegie Mellon, Ron was also the Stage Manager for Improv
'98, and a cast member of Violators Will be Towed.
He has been recognized on the street as "That guy who hosts
Jeopardy" and, despite popular opinion, still counts "World's
Worst" as one of his favorite games. The greatest compliment
he has ever received was from Donovan Chase, who once said,
"Ron, you make me feel like I've been drinking all day." |

Taylor is the other founding member of NPP who stayed with
NPP until his graduation. He was a cast member of Improv
'98, and was one of the NPP members who participated in
both the 1997 Homecoming Show as a Master of Ceremonies and
the 1997 Improv-a-thon as NPP's representation. He was the
first Publicity Pimp for NPP, designed many of the original
web pages, and still holds the record for most number of times
he has thrown himself through the air directly at the ground.

In the spring of 1997, a bright and shining angel of improv
came to the fore, wrested control of the troupe, and began
workshopping in earnest, laying about wildly with such lines
of wisdom as "What makes good scenes makes good improv" and
"It's only funny if you are serious" and "No Butt Theatre!"
This man had a vision. This man had a mission. This man did
not discover fission. This man was Jason Specland.
Now and for the hereafter, the Spiritual Leader of the No
Parking Players, and inaugural member of the NPP Hall of Fame.
Under his tutelage, the No Parking Players soon advanced their
meager skills to the level where it was deemed that they could
now entertain other people. Suddenly, the No Parking Players
were a performing troupe. ...sniff.... |

What is the Hall of Fame?
Every so often, an individual comes along who, through their
determination, attitude, spirit, talent, and commitment, significantly
changes this humble organization of college students for the better.
We fondly remember those who have made a difference and honor
them by placing them in the NPP Hall of Fame at the point when,
through graduation from Carnegie Mellon or some other means, they
depart our small sphere and head out to seek their fortune, make
a difference in the "real world," or, usually more immediately,
try to pay off their college loans.
In addition to a brief blurb and a picture, forever immortalizing
them upon this web page, each NPP alum receives a Gold PEZ Dispenser,
traditionally during a public awards ceremony.
The powers-that-be in NPP (the Grand Poobah and Business Manager)
take nominations from the NPP membership in the last weeks of the
semester and then hold a vote to decide who will be inducted into
the Hall of Fame.
