1: The masks seem to highlight the edges in the images. Subsequent masks provide images with higher resolution.

2: A smaller mask is able to highlight the more subtle local features in the image. Larger masks have the advantage of capturing more global data and eliminating effects due to noise.

3: A mask useful for identifying horizons would be a vertical version of the edge detection mask.:
