Notes:

The design for a Command Cruiser variant of the GALAXY-class starship was approved in late 2370 and the USS OLYMPIC was refit from GALAXY-class specifications early the following year. The refit was completed in January 2372. The USS QUASAR was built as a GALAXY-class Explorer and later upgraded to OLYMPIC-class specifications in mid-2373. She was launched Stardate 60528.1534. The USS OBERON was the first ship to be built as an OLYMPIC-class ship rather than being upgraded from an older GALAXY-class design. Another six vessels were planned for the class giving a total of eight (8), but these have not yet been constructed due to budgetting problems within StarFleet.

The reemerged Borg threat, the Maquis problem, and tension with the Cardassian Empire led to the decision in 2369 that a heavier varient of the GALAXY Class starship was needed to bolster fleet strength. The most significant changes occur in the saucer section where usable internal space has been increased by nearly twenty-five (25) percent and where five (5) decks have been added to birth the ship's marine compliment, to house marine equipment, and to incorporate a fourth shuttle bay. The upgrade of the OLYMPIC-class from Cruiser to Heavy Cruiser is reflected in the addition of another 2 photon torpedo launchers and one phaser bank.
