T1

Overview

DS0 service is based on the historical fact that telecommunications services were originally devoted to transferring voice communication. Data networks were enabled by voice network infrastructure. Translating an analog voice signal to digital transmission requires 8,000 samples per second, twice the bandwidth of the human voice. Each sample is coded onto 8 bits. The product of the two is the bandwidth required to carry the signal. Time division multiplexing in T1 schemes was developed to supply a frame rate of 8,000 frames per second to each logical channel.
