Educating for Justice: Leslie Kretzu and Jim Keady

Wednesday, March 27, 2002
7:30 PM, McConomy Auditorium, CMU University Center

Leslie Kretzu and Jim Keady spent August 2000 living
in a factory worker's slum in Tangerang, Indonesia on
$1.25 a day, a typical wage paid to Nike's workers.
"Starving for the Swoosh," their one-hour and fifteen minute
interactive multimedia presentation, followed by a
forty five minute question and answer period, includes
slide shows, music, role-playing, and powerful new video
footage of Kretzu and Keady's chance encounter with
Nike CEO Phil Knight at Nike headquarters in Beaverton,
Oregon.
Jim Keady is a former soccer coach at St. John's
University. He was forced to resign for refusing to
wear Nike soccer equipment. Leslie Kretzu recently
made headlines when she carried the Olympic torch
through Philadelphia barefoot to call attention to
what she says are abusive labor practices overseas.
