Local Currents 8: Performance, Humor, and Grassroots Action

Tuesday, March 19 @ 8pm, Mudge Piano Lounge

Larry Bogad and Karen Wood-Campbell will discuss performative and
satirical/humorous tactics in environmental and social activist work. This
will be an amazing discussion- and action-based follow up to Bogad's talk
on Monday (see below).

about the discussion leaders:

Larry Bogad (postdoctoral fellow, Center for the Arts in Society) received
his Ph.D. in Performance Studies from Northwestern University in June 2001.
His academic work focuses on the impact of activistand guerrilla theater;
his dissertation examined the aesthetic choices and tactics of electoral
guerrilla theatre performance artists and activists in the Netherlands,
Australia, and the United States. As a theater practitioner, he has
designed performance pieces for the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless, as
well as writing and directing "Haymarket," a multimedia play that recalled
the Haymarket Square riot of 1886. As an actor, he has appeared in several
award-winning independent films, as well as stage productions in New York,
Edinburgh, Philadelphia, Chicago, Santa Fe and Miami.

Karen Wood-Campbell arrived in western Oregon in 1984, as the
controversy over continued logging of old-growth forests began to heat
up. In 1987, she was arrested for blocking a logging operation in the
North Kalmiopsis Roadless Area of the Siskiyou National Forest, in
southwestern Oregon. Later that year, she worked with the first
tree-climbers in the ancient redwoods of northern California, and returned
to Eugene to start the Southern Willamette Earth First!
activist group. Over the next eight years, Southern Willamette Earth
First! became known for its lively and and often humorous protests in
western Oregon during the height of the "spotted owl controversy." Karen
also worked with other nonprofit environmental groups in Oregon,
including League of Wilderness Defenders (which she founded), and the
Siskiyou Project. In the year 2000, Karen and her family moved to
Pittsburgh to be closer to their families. Karen currently lives in the
North Hills with her husband and two young daughters, where she works at
home as a part-time bookkeeper while homeschooling her daughters. Karen
also serves on the board of the Allegheny Defense Project, a group based
in Clarion that is working to stop commercial logging, drilling and
mining in the Allegheny National Forest.

430 PM
Monday, March 18th
CFA 303

Larry Bogad, Fellow at the Center for the Arts in Society

"Candidate Drag: The Politics and Aesthetics of Electoral Guerrilla
Theatre."

Drawing on examples from the US, Australia and the Netherlands, this talk
will define, analyze and critique a protest performance genre Bogad calls
"electoral guerrilla theatre," in which members of marginalized groups
campaign for public office using highly theatrical, satirical, and ironic
tactics.

(PCAN) since its founding. Before serving as executive director of PCAN, he
was the PA director of Citizen Action. Mr. Morrill served as the lead
