Voices That Beautify the Earth
composer: Nancy Galbraith (2008)
genre: flute solo
length: 1 movement, 5:00 minutes
program notes: "Voices That Beautify the Earth" was commissioned by the Laurels Project—begun in 2003 by American flutist Nina Assimakopoulos—that commissions American women to compose short pieces for solo flute that are based on literary works. To date, the project has produced two recordings that feature composers who represent a broad cross-section of 21st century aesthetic styles. The text that inspired "Voices..." is a traditional native American poem.
audio sample:
text: Voice above,
Voice of thunder,
Speak from the dark of clouds;
Voice below,
Grasshopper vioce,
Speak from the green of plants,
So may the earth be beautiful.
