program notes: "Island Echoes" is an exotic and rhythmically driving trio for percussion presented in the composer’s characteristic postminimalist style. The work is centered around three mallet instruments—marimba, vibraphone, xylophone—accompanied by an array of drums and devices, including tom-toms, bongos, Conga drums, log drums, maracas, crotales, cowbells, claves, ratchets, wood blocks, and timbales.
"Island Echoes" received its world premiere in 2000 at Northwestern College in St. Paul. The trio was later augmented with additional instruments, including tuned gongs, and synthesizer. The new version was premiered in 2004 at the 7th Festival of Women Composers International in Indiana, Pennsylvania.
press bytes: "Island Echoes" is scored for percussion only, and features the Indiana University of Pennsylvania Percussion Trio. It is an imaginative, inviting piece that features mallet instruments, so that melody and harmony are not overlooked, although, of course, rhythmic factors predominate. — Fanfare Magazine
