Excel Lesson 11
Go to the START menu in the bottom left, choose PROGRAMS, and start EXCEL.
Go to the FILE menu in Excel, choose OPEN, and open the file GAMES1.xls from your Excel folder.
You are going to make a CHART that shows how many games each person has.
HIGHLIGHT the six cells that have the three names and three numbers.. (Do NOT highlight totals or column headings, if you have them in the file.)
Now, we are going to find the CHART WIZARD icon.
Find the list of MENUS at the top of the spreadsheet (FILE, EDIT, VIEW, and so on.)
Look below the menus, where the shortcuts are.
Look for the picture in this row that has red, yellow, and blue bars.
Move the mouse so that the mouse cursor is in the middle of the picture.
When the cursor is in the middle, the words ‘Chart Wizard’ should appear in a box below the picture.
DOUBLE-CLICK on the CHART WIZARD picture.
Now, you will see a CHART WIZARD box.
In the box, look under CHART TYPE.
What TYPE is highlighted? (Column)
Now, look under CHART SUB-TYPES.
You should see different kinds of COLUMN charts.
Look back at CHART TYPE on the left.
CLICK to highlight BAR.
What happened under CHART SUB-TYPE?
Go back to CHART TYPE, and CLICK to highlight PIE.
What happened in CHART SUB-TYPE?
Look in CHART TYPE, and CLICK to highlight COLUMN again.
You are going to make a COLUMN chart.
In the CHART WIZARD box, CLICK on the NEXT button to go to the next step.
Do you see a CHART in the CHART WIZARD box?
In the CHART WIZARD box, click on the NEXT button to go to the next step.
You are now in step 3 of the CHART WIZARD.
Under CHART TITLE, type GAMES.
What happened to the graph on the right?
In the CHART WIZARD box, CLICK on the NEXT button to go to the next step.
In the last step, we tell Excel where to put the chart.
The second choice, ‘as object in’, should be selected.
Now click FINISH.
A graph has been pasted in the worksheet.
Go to the FILE menu, and choose SAVE, to save the graph with the spreadsheet.
Hit ESCAPE to start over with another chart.
Highlight the names and numbers from the spreadsheet again.
Click on the CHART WIZARD icon again
This time, you may select another kind of chart. Click NEXT.
At the Chart Wizard Step 2, just click NEXT.
At Chart Wizard Step 3, think of a title for the new chart, and type it in the Chart Title box. Click next.
At step 4, make sure the second circle, “as object in”, is selected, and click FINISH.
Now you should have two charts saved in one worksheet. One is probably on top of the other. You can fix that.
Click in the chart you just made. Click JUST INSIDE the outline of the square the chart is in.
Now you can drag the whole thing with the mouse, over or down, so that you can see both charts.
You can also move just the chart, inside the square. Click right on the chart. Now try moving the chart over inside the square.
While the chart is still highlighted, move the mouse cursor to a corner of the chart, hold the button down, and drag.
Did you change the size of the chart?
Now, go to the FILE menu, and chose SAVE to save the second chart you made.
Let’s try making one more kind of chart with this data.
Hit ESCAPE to start over with another chart.
Highlight the names and numbers from the spreadsheet again.
Click on the CHART WIZARD icon again
This time, you may select another kind of chart. If you have not yet tried making a PIE chart, choose that this time. Click NEXT.
At the Chart Wizard Step 2, just click NEXT.
At Chart Wizard Step 3, be sure and type in a Title. Do NOT click Next yet!
Look at the “tabs” on the top of the Chart Wizard.
The first one is Title, the next two are Axes and Gridlines. Click on the fourth one, Legend.
Do you know what a Legend is? Click to uncheck the box that says “Show legend”. What happens?
Try selecting a different placement.
Click Next to go on to Step 4. Now you know that Step 3 has a different selections you can make to change the way your chart looks.
Make sure “as object in” is selected, and click Finish.
Move the new chart if you need to so that all three charts can be seen at once.
Which kind of chart do you think is easiest to understand? Why?
GO to the File menu, and save the file.
Now, open another file: CANDY1.xls.
Highlight the names of the candy and the numbers. Do NOT highlight any totals or column headings.
Choose the kind of chart you would like to make for the candy, and go ahead and make it.
Save the file when you are done, and exit from Excel.
