Excel Lesson 10
Use the Start menu to start Excel.
We are going to work on FORMATTING the data that is in our spreadsheets, to make it easier to read, and nicer-looking.
Open the file DIRECTORY2.xls.
Click on the number 1 on the far left hand side, to highlight the whole first row.
Go to the FORMAT menu, and choose CELLS.
Click on the FONT tab (it is the 3rd one, after NUMBER and ALIGNMENT).
Find SIZE, in the upper right.
Find the number 12. Click on the down arrow if you need to until the 12 appears, and highlight it.
If 12 was already chosen before you started, choose 14 instead.
This is to change the FONT SIZE of the column headings. You are making them bigger.
Now, look at FONT STYLE, in the top middle. Click on BOLD.
Click the OK button at the bottom of the Format Cells box to see your results.
Do your columns need to be wider so that bigger column headings will fit? If they do, make them wider.
Now, let’s add a title to your spreadsheet. To do this, we’ll need and extra row at the top.
Click anywhere in the first row.
Now, use the INSERT menu and select ROWS.
You should have a blank row at the top. In cell A1, type your name, and hit ENTER.
Now, let’s make your name BOLD. This time, we will use a shortcut.
Click once in the cell that has your name in it. This is the same as highlighting the cell.
Now, look at the top of the spreadsheet. The very top has menus- FILE, EDIT, and the rest of the menus.
Look underneath the menu names. You may already know some of these shortcuts. Look for the uppercase B that is on the right side. Click on it.
Your name should now appear in BOLD. Now, click on the I that is next to the B.
Your name should now be italics as well as bold.
Now, we are going to find a way to center your name.
Highlight cells A1 through G1.
Select the FORMAT menu, and click on the second tab, ALIGNMENT.
Find the HORIZONTAL box, click on the down arrow to see all the selections, and choose CENTER ACROSS SELECTION.
Save this file, and open up CANDY2.
Use the FONT menu and make your column headings larger and Bold.
Now, highlight all the candy names, and make them Italic. You can click on the I, or use the FORMAT menu to do this.
Save this file, and open up a new worksheet.
Type the number 30 in this cell, and hit enter.. Imagine that this number is thirty dollars. We want to format it, so that it looks like dollars.
Click in the cell with the 30 in it to highlight it.
Go to the FORMAT menu, and choose CELLS. The first tab, NUMBERS, is already selected.
Click on CURRENCY, and OK.
You should see your number looking like dollars. Save your work, and exit from Excel.
