Symptoms:

• One or both of the fish's eyes bulge

What is it?

Popeye, like dropsy, is a sign of a more serious internal bacterial infection.

How did it get there?

Popeye is usually caused by poor water conditions. If your water is kept clean, your fish is not likely to get popeye.

Treatment

Immediately do a 90% water change and keep the water very clean, changing it every 3 days. An antibacterial medication that treats both gram positive and gram negative could be added to help recovery. If the popeye is caused by tuberculosis, then there is no cure.

Prevention

• Maintaining clean water will prevent popeye. If it is from tuberculosis, then not reusing anything that came in contact with the sick fish would prevent passing it on to other fish.
