Common Medications
This is a list of the common betta medications found in pet stores.
BettaFix/Melafix
Helps treat mild cases of bacterial infection and promotes the growth of new tissue such as scales or tail. BettaFix is just a diluted version of melafix. If your tank is larger than 3 gallons it would be better to purchase the melafix, or you will have to purchase several bottles of BettaFix. They are an all natural medication made of tea tree oil. As a result, it will smell very strongly and each day a film will result on the top of the tank water. This should be scooped off. They will not stain the water, change pH or interfere with the biological filters in the tank.
When to use?
Minor or new cases of tail or fin rot, injuries from plastic plants, torn fins, transit injuries, net injuries, or any minor scrape.
Pimafix
Treats new or minor fungal infections and works against some mild bacterial infections. May be used in conjunction with BettaFix/Melafix to prevent secondary fungal infections in injuries and works best when used with BettaFix/Melafix. Made from leaves of the West Indian Bay tree.
When to use?
Minor or new cases of fungal infection. Works best on new outbreaks and in conjunction with Bettafix/Melafix
Quick Cure
Contains malachite green and formalin. When treating fish with QuickCure, remove any biological filter or activated carbon. You will want to keep the tank lights off duing the treatment so that the Malachite green is not oxidized. Formalin is a toxic ingredient and its toxicity increases with the water temperature and acidity. Weak fish may not survive treatment. QuickCure decreases the amount of dissoved oxygen in the water, so having an airstone running or adding an oxygen tablet to the water will help. Remove any catfish, cotias or loaches before treatment. Use half of the treatment for tetras. Malachite green will stain the water and any silicone in your tank green. It will stain everything it touches.
When to use?
QuickCure treats ich/ick and other external parasites such as velvet or chilodonella.
Copper Safe
CopperSafe contains chelated copper sulfate. When using CopperSafe, follow the directions and only treat once a month. CopperSafe maintains a copper level of 1.5-2.0 ppm, and a binding agent makes it nontoxic to fish but effective against parasites. Make sure you do not overdose or it will be toxic to fish. It may be harmful to plants and snails. Remove carbon from filter during treatment.
When to use?
CopperSafe is very effective against velvet and other external parasites such as anchor worms, ich/ick, flukes, etc.
Maracide
Maracide contains malachite green and chitosan. Malachite green will stain everything it comes in contact with so be careful when using it. It will stain the water and silicone in the aquarium, but will fade with time. Remove any biological filter while treating and keep the tank light off to prevent oxidation of the malachite green. An airstone or oxygen tablets should be used since Maracide decreases the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water.
When to use?
Maracide treats against external parasites such as ick/ich, velvet, or other parasites.
Maracyn/Maracyn-2/Maracyn plus
The group of Maracyn medications treat for bacterial infections. Maracyn treats against gram-positive bacteria (popeye, gill disease, and fin/tail rot), Maracyn-2 treats gram-negative (fin/tail rot, popeye, secondary and internal infections, septicemia, and sick fish that will not eat) and Maracyn plus treats the same things as maracyn and maracyn 2 but it actually adheres to the fish to deliver medicine and helps prevent reinfection during treatment. Maracyn contains Erythromycin, also contains B-complex vitamins which are important during illness and needed healing; maracyn 2 contains Minocycline and maracyn plus contains Sulfadimidine and Trimethoprin, Chitosan (adheres to fish like slime coat to deliver meds). Do not use Maracyn plus with epsom salts. The maracyns will cloud the water during treatment. Biological filters should be removed during treatment.
When to use?
Maracyn for external bacterial infections. Maracyn 2 for internal bacterial infections and for sick fish who will not eat. Maracyn plus to prevent reinfection.
Betta Revive
Betta revive is a general purpose betta medication for most of the common betta diseases. Prevents and controls protozoan, bacterial, and fungal diseases. Helps regenerate damaged tails and fins. I was not able to find much information as to what is in betta revive, so the safest thing is to remove your betta from a community tank to treat because it is unknown what effect it will have on other fish.
When to use?
If this is the only medication available to you and you have a sick betta, it would most likely work. If you are a new fish owner and are still confused with all of the medication and diseases, it might be worthwhile to use.
