Oxford Art Online
Links to these comprehensive image sites as of 2005:

-Art Image Links includes international museum and gallery websites selected by the editors of Grove Art Online

-Art Resources contains 90,000 images in art history, with a good 20th century representation

-The Bridgeman Art Library contains 100,000 art images from major international museums, galleries and auction houses.

Credo Reference

-Choose the "image" tab to find images in over two-hundred dictionaries and encyclopedias across disciplines

Partners with the for-profit sector, so expect promos and advertisements that may not be related to your search. Artists and galleries can also pay to be listed.

VADS: The Online Resource for Visual Arts
Online "visual art collections comprising over 100,000 images that are freely available and copyright cleared for use in learning, teaching and research in the UK." Includes the Learning Index, a series of teaching resources based in the collection by subject specialists and lecturers.

WebMuseum, Paris Artist Index
Biographical Information with thumbnails and higher resolution images.

Web Gallery of Art
Digital reproductions of European paintings and sculptures created between the years 1150 and 1800. Lists artists by name with biographical and thumbnail image links.
