an hour in the graveyard.

I used a camera to detect motion in a graveyard, but the problem is, there was none. My initial thoughts were that I would capture grieving families visiting their loved ones graves, but upon closer inspection, the graveyard was a place of stillness. Any breath of life (whether it be wind or a bird) was noticed and captured with my camera, and became an hour long video of the real experience of a graveyard.

here is a compressed 20 minute video.

every one minute in the video is 3 minutes in real time.

the three scenarios.

One.

A dark, empty room with only the light of the projector, when there is motion, the projector will flicker on lighting the space, otherwise complete darkness.

here is a trial run.

Two.

A camera will be constantly at the graveyard measuring motion, if there is motion currently at the graveyard, a stream of dust or dirt will fall from the ceiling, until motion is stopped. The result will be a series of mounds of dirt which represent the amount of motion in the graveyard.

Three.

After experimenting with the projector as the only sorce of light in the space, I realized how much potential this technique had for introducing surrounding architecture and spacial relationships. With this in mind, I can up with my final and favorite scenario. The architecture would change direcctly in relation to movement in the grave yard. Mounds would form in a circle, referencing cyclic behavior, the viewer will be fored to stand in the middle of the circle to see the video. As the video plays, it will introduce the new architecture which will also be changing simultaneously according to movement in the grave yard.

After realizing that the graveyard wasn't a good use for this tool that I had created, I decided to also create this project:

The First Row, Second Pane from the Right (March.2.2007).

This project visualizes all of the movement outside of one of my window panes for a 24 hour period. The program that I wrote captured the frames from a DV camera in which the image had changed since the last frame, thus producing a motion capture camera. Because of this technique, my video almost takes on a stop frame animation appearance. Again, the video shown is ONLY when there is movement.
