Frequently Asked Questions
- What is Kappa Sigma?
- Kappa Sigma is a college social fraternity which can trace its history at Carnegie Mellon back to the early 1900's. It is founded on the pillars of Fellowship, Leadership, Scholarship, and Service. Check out the International Kappa Sigma Website.
- What do you do in Kappa Sigma?
- We participate in a number of events as a Fraternity including Greek Sing, Greek Week, and Dance Marathon. We also field IM teams and do our fair share of community service. And of course, we like to have a good time.
- What IM teams do you have?
- We currently have flag football, bowling, hockey, tennis, and co-ed volleyball to name a few. And if interest arises, we'll put together a team for any IM the school offers.
- What kinds of community service do you do?
- We are affiliated with Pittsburgh Cares, a nonprofit organization which coordinates between volunteers and activity organizers. We have done everything from playing bingo with the elderly to planting trees to volunteering at Heinz Field during Steelers games. For more info see our Service Section or contact our current Philanthropy Chair, Anthony Santos .
- What kinds of social events do you have?
- In addition to daily dinners and lunches at our chapter house, we have mixers with sororities and other organizations on a regular basis. For more information contact our current Social Chair, Jonathan Senn , for more info.
- What do you do outside of Kappa Sigma?
- Every Brother is a unique individual with his own interests and hobbies. We have members on varsity sports teams, ROTC, Order of Omega, College Republicans, and College Democrats just to name a few. Some Brothers choose to get a job and earn some spending money in their spare time. Other interests include skateboarding, scuba diving, flying, traveling, cooking, and a variety of others. If you're into something, chances are you can connect with someone at Kappa Sigma.
- What will I do as a pledge?
- You will learn more about the Fraternity, both its history and how it functions today. The goal of pledge education is to prepare you to, someday, lead the house. If you would like to know more about our pledge process, please contact our current Pledge Educator, Richard Wang , for more info.
- How long will I be a pledge?
- While other fraternities may have you pledge for a semester or more, Kappa Sigma adheres to a 60 day pledge program.
- Will pledging take up all of my time?
- No. Pledging is designed to enhance you experience in college, not replace it. We understand the requirements of attending a university like Carnegie Mellon and would never impede your ability to succeed at school or other activities. Pledging may take a great deal of effort but it should never impede your scholastic and extracaricular endeavors.
- Will I fail out of school if I join?
- No. Your education comes first. Kappa Sigma has very strict academic requirements and a supportive scholarship program to help you along the way. We boast one of the highest GPAs on campus. For more info, see our Scholarship Section, or contact our current Scholarship Chair, Maxwell Koo .
- Will I be hazed?
- Absolutely not. Hazing is against state law, CMU regulations, and Kappa Sigma principals. There is no place for hazing in Kappa Sigma.
- Does it cost a lot to be in Kappa Sigma?
- We only pay for the activities we want to take part in. Everything costs money, but we try to keep our expenses to a minimum. For more info contact our Grand Treasurer, Kevin Jang .
- How long have you been living at your house on the Quad?
- We have lived at "The Top of the Quad" for over 35 years. Beginning with the construction of the house, 1063 Morewood Ave., Kappa Sigmas have occupied it. In 2004 events occurred which forced the fraternity to seek residence off campus, however the chapter recovered and has been back on the quad since the fall of 2006.
- You didn't talk about xyz. Where can I ask more questions?
- Contact our current Grand Master, Collin Edington , for any other questions.
- This all sounds great! How do I join?
- Stop by one of our Rush events or contact our current Rush Chair, Bryan Shultz , for more info.
