Abstract

Bandwidth is a measurement of the ability of a machine to transfer, both download
and upload, data. It is measured in bits/second, which is also known as the bit
rate. Bandwidth is usually measured and controlled by Internet Service providers in
order to stop a single user from using up all the bandwidth. If a person exceeds
their bandwidth usage then their internet connection is either slowed down or shut
off. At Carnegie Mellon there are strict bandwidth guidelines. A student is not
allowed more than 750MB on a wireless connection and 2.0GB on a wired connection.
There are consequences, such as having internet access removed, if a person exceeds
these limits.
