Female Art:
The Outside (SOLO SHOW)

The second installment of the Female Art project will be featured, alongside the first, in a solo show at ASH Galleries in June. Extended through the 25th of July!

Excerpt from the artist statement:
The body awakened, our first experience is not necessarily ourselves nor everything else but our relationship to the outside. Our hand and strength take shape in our understanding as we use it to manipulate and move. In this relationship, we can be agressive, conciliatory, indifferent.. how this translates into my visual journey of the female identity and history comes out in new paintings including Cleopatra and the Peacock.

This show is going to be part of the GetNaked! Series that inaugurated the gallery last year. The opening will feature INOOR, the bellydance troupe and drumming. INOOR will perform at the opening of the show. This time, the dancers will perform improvisationally responding to the music, in the same spirit of the explorations of the paintings. Everyone is invited to join in!...

ART IN TRANSIT TO DISPLAY IN ARTSPACE 303 GALLERY MAY 18

    In addition to brightening Port Authority's buses with their
work, beginning May 18, 2006, artspace 303 will display the work of
artists participating in Art In Transit, a collaborative project with
Port Authority and The Sprout Fund Seed Award Program designed to
celebrate public transit and bring art into more peoples' lives.

    In association with the Steel Valley Arts Council, the Homestead gallery artspace 303 will feature the works of the artists, including the original 31 drawings, paintings, and photographs that are displayed in the Port Authority buses. The original pieces, along with brief bios of the artists, can be viewed online at www.artbusonline.com or in Art Guides available at all major Port Authority schedule rack locations.

    "Like the staff of artspace 303, we feel that art should be enjoyed by everyone," said Fred Zeleny, coordinator of Art In Transit. "Like public transit, it's an important part of our city's growth, and it should be readily accessible to all."

    The gallery, which is positioned on the 53H and 61C bus routes, will have an opening celebration for the gallery's show from 7-10 p.m. Saturday, May 20 featuring many of the artists and a variety of their works relating to public transit. The event is free, and a limited number of copies of the works will be available for sale, a portion of
which will help fund next year's show. The work will be displayed in artspace 303 until May 30, but will continue to be displayed in the buses for another five months.

    artspace 303 is an extension of the Steel Valley Arts Council, a non-profit, community arts organization dedicated to preservation, community interaction, dialogue, and emerging artistic thought through rich creative endeavors. The gallery aims to encourage everyone to engage in a neutral space where all thoughts are active, free, and expressive.

    "We are excited about collaborating with Art In Transit as a continued expression of our community-minded approach to the arts," said Brian Britza, gallery committee chairperson of artspace 303. "Too many people have a misconception of a gallery as a place that's exclusive and unapproachable to non-artists. We feel this show will
help bring down barriers in regard to perceptions of what a gallery is."

Art in Transit - Take a Bus !

From Art in Transit announcement:

"Sarah" is the piece that will be circulating in Pittsburgh's buses for the next six months! Take a bus to work!

On Friday, April 21st, the Art In Transit project will roll onto the
streets -- approximately 900 PAT buses will display pieces from AIT
artists, beginning a roughly six-month showtime. At the same time, Art
Guides will be available wherever bus schedules can be found,
displaying each artist's work and self-description. What's more, the
project website, www.artbusonline.com is *already* open to the public,
displaying the selected works and available information.

Furthermore, we're happy to announce a very special opening event: in
conjunction with Port Authority Transit, The Sprout Fund Seed Award
Program, and the PIttsburgh Cultural Trust, the Art In Transit project
will have a special "Artbus Opening" on Friday April 21st, from 5Pm -
9Pm. A single bus, loaded with artists and every piece in the show,
will be making the Gallery Crawl rounds, providing free rides and
gallery excitement to artists and patrons of all sorts. Add on the
fact that our main stop will be an Art In Transit display in the Wood
Street Galleries, and it should make for a great night!

Female Art:
Into the Dark

This solo show deals with the beginning of my new body of work about the nature of Female.

Getting inspiration from biology, history, anthropology, psychology and dance, this group of work deals with the beginning of the journey of the individual, the awakening of the body, of its instincts, its voice and potential and its parallel with the journey of human consciousness.

This body of work is the first step towards understanding the female identity, starting at the beginning of human life or of human consciousness, at my base, my body. This first moment concerns the coalescing of the individual body, the material biological self, out of the chaotic Whole. From the depth of the undifferentiated, primordial soup, the awakening of a screaming body in the dark, where the self is blind energy of flesh and blood moved entirely by its animal/body instincts. The expression of this archetype and stage comes to life in a series of figurative paintings about the primal self, the awakening of the body in very quiet moments and abstract bioart pieces, based on neurological research on the process of hereditary memory (the biological foundation for instinct) and fear.

The first show was on the theme “Down, around, under and through” and will be the first time we come together as a group. I am presenting a new series of paintings Nos that continue the exploration of intimaty and the blurring of identity that it entails of the painting "Blue Hours."

"MONOCHROMATIC: CONNECT 2"

This show was themed around the colors blue and orange displayed in opposing walls.I showed a piece from the body of work BioArt; this one in tones of blue, entitled "Instinct IV - Deimos".

MOSAIC

The painting "Untitled (Nails)" was shown at the "MOSAIC" events at the Carnegie Mellon University Art Gallery. This event is related to women's issues and celebrates the theme "MILESTONES--celebrating the strides made within gender-issues within the last year. MOSAIC is partnering with the Margaret Morrison College to bring Carnegie Mellon's history to the discussion as well."
