The officers are in charge of directing Model UN-related activities, including the
participation of Carnegie Mellon students at collegiate conferences and the annual hosting
of a high-school Model UN conference called the Carnegie Mellon Model UN Conference (CMMUNC),
which was first started in February 2005.
CMMUNC is run by the members of the IRO, which comprise what is known as the Secretariat.
The Secretariat is headed by the Secretary General, who is primarily responsible for the entire
conference. Other officers such as the Director General, Chief of Staff, and Undersecretary Generals (USGs)
also help, and the members in these positions are not necessarily officers in the IRO.
Article III: Membership
1. Any member of the Carnegie Mellon student community as defined by Student Senate is eligible
to be a member of the International Relations Organization. This includes both undergraduate
and graduate students.
2. "Active members" are members who have (1) helped run the Carnegie Mellon Model UN Conference during the academic year in
which the elections are run, and (2) actively participated in the IRO as deemed by the President(s).
New members (e.g. freshmen) are counted as active members until the first Carnegie Mellon
Model UN Conference takes place during their membership with the IRO.
3. Dues take the form of contributions to the Carnegie Mellon Model UN Conference,
which is a major funding source for the IRO. All members of the IRO are expected
to contribute to help make CMMUNC a success.
4. Only active members shall be eligible to represent Carnegie Mellon and the
International Relations Organization at collegiate Model UN conferences. In the
case of exceptional circumstances, the President(s) have the authority to make one-time exceptions.
Article IV: Officers
Section A: Officer Positions
1. Together the President(s) and the Secretary General (if not the same)
assure the continued well-being of the organization; run all meetings; represent
the organization to the Carnegie Mellon administration, campus
groups, and external organizations; direct the activities
of their respective branches; and appoint special committees
as needed.
2. The Vice President is responsible in the absence of the President
for the above-mentioned duties; advises and assists
the President on all matters; and assists in publicizing
the International Relations Organization. The Vice President may also be
called upon by the President(s) or Secretary General as needed.
3. The Treasurer's duties are to handle the financial affairs of the IRO. More
precisely: to represent the IRO at Student Senate funding
budget hearings and meetings with the Joint Funding
Committee or Committee on Student Organizations; to coordinate and assist fundraisers;
and to prepare and maintain the IRO budget.
4. The Secretary is responsible for assisting the IRO with any external
correspondance; handling internal correspondance such
as meeting notifications; recording the minutes of each
meeting; and maint aining the records of the organization
including its history.
5. New officer positions may be created by the President(s) or Secretary General as needed.
Similarly, should some officer positions be deemed no
longer necessary or efficient, they may be dissolved.
Section B: Appointment of Officers
1. Elections of officers shall be held in the Spring semester for the following academic
year. If vacancies exist at the beginning of an academic year, elections may be
held at the beginning of the Fall semester.
2. Officer positions shall be for the one academic year following the election,
unless the election is in the Fall semester, when the elected officers immediately
are installed into the positions for that academic year.
3. Election meetings must be announced at least two meetings in advance.
4. Only active members may run for office. Only those who have been an active member for
one full academic year may run for the offices of President and Vice President.
5. Each candidate shall have the opportunity to present and introduce himself or herself at the
general meeting called for the election.
6. Elections shall be by majority vote of the membership.
7. Newly elected officers in the Spring semester shall work with current officers
until the end of the academic year preceding their
year of office so as to ease transition.
Article V: Operations
1. The President(s) shall be the formal contact of the International Relations Organization.

Article VI: Amendments
1. Amendments to the Constitution may be proposed by any
member of the International Relations Organization.
2. Amendments
shall be debated at a general meeting, with
the opportunity for an equal amount of time given to those for and against
the amendment.
3. At the end of the general
meeting when the amendment is debated, a vote will be taken regarding
the amendment. An amendment must have the support of one-third of the
membership present at the meeting to be voted on.
4. Voting
on the amendment shall take place at the following general meeting. Amendments shall be passed by
majority vote of the active membership.
5. This Constitution will take effect starting with the 2005-2006 academic year.
