Constitution

Article I: Purpose

The International Relations Organization at Carnegie Mellon University has been founded with the following objectives in mind:
  • to provide opportunities for students to participate in Model UN activities, including hosting Model United Nations conferences at Carnegie Mellon
  • to act as a non-sectarian, non-politically oriented student organization whose prime focus is in furthering awareness of the global community
  • to promote awareness of other cultures and understanding of international business
  • to provide a forum for discussion of international issues
  • to create a student organization at Carnegie Mellon in which all students will be actively involved

Article II: Organization

The International Relations Organization (IRO) is comprised of both undergraduate and graduate students at Carnegie Mellon University. The club actively works with a faculty advisor to organize events such as speakers, forums, and opportunities abroad such as internships. The IRO is led by either a President or Co-Presidents. Below are the Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. This group of officers are responsible for the general running of IRO in its financial affairs, publicity, representation to faculty and Student Senate, and election of officers.

The officers are in charge of directing Model UN-related activities, including the participation of Carnegie Mellon students at collegiate conferences and the annual hosting of a high-school Model UN conference called the Carnegie Mellon Model UN Conference (CMMUNC), which was first started in February 2005. CMMUNC is run by the members of the IRO, which comprise what is known as the Secretariat. The Secretariat is headed by the Secretary General, who is primarily responsible for the entire conference. Other officers such as the Director General, Chief of Staff, and Undersecretary Generals (USGs) also help, and the members in these positions are not necessarily officers in the IRO.

Article III: Membership

1. Any member of the Carnegie Mellon student community as defined by Student Senate is eligible to be a member of the International Relations Organization. This includes both undergraduate and graduate students.

2. "Active members" are members who have (1) helped run the Carnegie Mellon Model UN Conference during the academic year in which the elections are run, and (2) actively participated in the IRO as deemed by the President(s). New members (e.g. freshmen) are counted as active members until the first Carnegie Mellon Model UN Conference takes place during their membership with the IRO.

3. Dues take the form of contributions to the Carnegie Mellon Model UN Conference, which is a major funding source for the IRO. All members of the IRO are expected to contribute to help make CMMUNC a success.

4. Only active members shall be eligible to represent Carnegie Mellon and the International Relations Organization at collegiate Model UN conferences. In the case of exceptional circumstances, the President(s) have the authority to make one-time exceptions.
