Travel in Groups if possible</span></span></b><br> Since a lot of you would be traveling to the <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">US</st1:place></st1:country-region> for the first time, company won't hurt! It will also be cheaper for you, if you share a taxi from the Airport to the Campus (or wherever else in city). You should also try to find one or two roommates with whom you would be sharing an apartment <b>before</b> you arrive to CMU, since doing so after coming here is much more difficult. Knowing your <span class=SpellE>batchmates</span> beforehand will make this task easy! <o:p></o:p></p> <!-- <b>2. Arrive in the second week of August</b><br> Most of the apartments will have leases starting from the 1st day of the month. So, even if you move in on 25th December, you may have to pay the full rent for the month of December, in some places. Therefore, it is advisable for you to arrive in Pittsburgh either in late December (after the 27th) or in the first week of January. </font></p>--><!-- <p align="center"><b><font face="Arial" size="2"><i>Newark = New Jersey Airport (and not equal to New York)</i></font></b></p> --> <p><b><span style='mso-themecolor:accent3;mso-themeshade:128'><span style='color:#4F6228'>2. Currency</span></span></b><span style='mso-themecolor:accent3; mso-themeshade:128'><span style='color:#4F6228'><br> </span></span>Carry <span class=SpellE>upto</span> $300 (maximum) in cash and the remaining as Traveler's <span class=SpellE>Cheques</span> (carry at least $1500 in traveler's <span class=SpellE>cheques</span>). Carry some change. About 10-15 $1 bills and some $20 bills. Also, try to get some 25 cent coins. Say for about 5 dollars. You will need them to make phone calls from public phones, rent a trolley at the airport, etc. <o:p></o:p></p> <p><b><span style='mso-themecolor:accent3;mso-themeshade:128'><span style='color:#4F6228'>3. Luggage</span></span><br> </b>As long as you carry suitcases or bags which are of common standard sizes nobody really cares about the exact dimensions. 1 or 2 inches more than the allowed dimensions is usually acceptable. If you are buying a suitcase, ask the shop keeper whether the suitcase will be allowed by US carriers. In most cases, he/she will be able to tell you. Weight constraints should be <b>strictly</b> observed. Otherwise, you might have to take out stuff at the airport, or pay for the extra weight.<br> <br> By word of mouth we have heard that<span class=GramE>:</span><br> Air <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:country-region w:st="on">India</st1:country-region></st1:place> is still offering 3 pieces of baggage on a student VISA. In case you are planning to get 3 bags, you <b>must</b> contact your airline / travel agent, and confirm if this is ok. The local flights here (e.g<span class=GramE>.-</span> <st1:State w:st="on">New Jersey</st1:State> to <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Pittsburgh</st1:City></st1:place>) will let you carry only 2 bags of 23 <span class=SpellE>kgs</span> each (plus a small hand bag / backpack). These flights will charge you extra for any excess baggage. (to the tune of $75)</p> <p>In all cases, it is advisable to check with your agents about extra luggage policy for all your connecting flights.<o:p></o:p></p> <p><b><span style='mso-themecolor:accent3;mso-themeshade:128'><span style='color:#4F6228'>4. Weather in <st1:City w:st="on">Pittsburgh</span></st1:City></span></b><br> Summers in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Pittsburgh</st1:City></st1:place> <span class=GramE>are</span> pretty warm and sunny, like a typical Indian summer. And winters are very cold (this year, the lowest was around -25 Celsius!). So get enough T-shirts, but you'll most probably have to buy a warm winter jacket after coming here. The weather here is highly unpredictable. It should be quite pleasant when you arrive here in Fall, but you never know :). So bring an umbrella along, and keep it handy (preferably in your hand baggage). Also keep a sweater or light jacket handy.</p> <p><b><span style='color:#4F6228'>5. Travel Hitches</span></b><br> Keep a gap of at least 4 hours between your port of entry flight and the next connecting flight to <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Pittsburgh</st1:place></st1:City>. It takes about 2-3 hours for deplaning, immigration, luggage collection, <span class=GramE>check</span>-in for the next flight, security check etc. So if your flight is late by even 1 hour you may get hung up. Waiting at the airport for an hour is much better than getting stranded <span class=GramE>overnight !</span> <br> What if you anyway missing your connecting <span class=GramE>flight ?!</span> <br> Make sure that your connecting flight itself is not running late! You should check once at the connecting flight's desk. Many a times, the connecting airline might put you in one of their later flights for no extra charge! However, if this doesn't work, go to the airline's counter which was late. They are responsible for taking care of you. Try to go as soon as possible instead of banging your head at the connecting airline's desk. </p> <p>In any case, if you missed a flight and are stranded for a night, it is the responsibility of the carrier which was late, to get you on the next flight and provide you stay if you need to wait overnight.</p> <p>Other things happen too: Like bad weather at your port of entry leading to delay or cancellation of your connecting flight. This is not a random rare case and happens quite often. All you can do about it is just take action as a customer i.e. be polite but do check with your airline regarding the arrangement that is being made and make sure you get updates for the situation. However, do keep in mind that if your flight is delayed due to bad weather, then the airline might refuse to provide you with accommodation for the night and you just have to stay at the airport.<o:p></o:p></p> <p><b><span style='mso-themecolor:accent3;mso-themeshade:128'><span style='color:#4F6228'>6. Strangers</span></span></b><br> Like the movie name, don't talk to strangers. Don't hitch rides with other people or a random cab driver who happens to be at the scene, even if they offer cheaper deals, especially when you are alone. Try to be in areas where there is some traffic or there are some people, and it has abundant light. We are saying this only in the interest of not taking any chances. Usually things are pretty safe!<o:p></o:p></p> <p><b><span style='mso-themecolor:accent3;mso-themeshade:128'><span style='color:#4F6228'>7. What to carry</span></span></b><br> There is extensive debate on this topic. However, conventionally recommended list of items can be found at: <a href="http://www2.uic.edu/stud_orgs/cultures/igsa/prospective/things2Carry.htm" target="_blank">IGSA - UIC</a> and <a href="http://www.clubs.psu.edu/up/igsa/things.html" target="_blank">IGSA - <span class=SpellE>PennState</span></a>. You must take these lists as the extreme in terms of not missing out anything. However, there are many items which you may or may not need. Use your own <span class=SpellE>judgement</span>! Special note: US also cultivates <span class=SpellE>Daal</span>, rice etc!!</p> <p>Most importantly, do carry an extra dress, all documents and any other thing that you cannot live without for 3-4 days in your cabin bag. It is possible that your luggage gets delayed (it might be coming on another flight!) and sometimes you may not get it while checking out. It is safely delivered to your home by most airlines, but you should be prepared to live a day or two without it.</p> <p>In case you luggage is misplaced, contact the corresponding airlines counter at the airport. They will give you a receipt and you'll typically need to give them a way to contact you. You can use your temporary host's (in case you need temporary accommodation) contacts for this purpose. Do let your host know that he/she should expect a call from the airline about luggage.</p> <p>Regarding books, you can find some good deals online here than carrying books from there.
