1. Please select the one which best describes your level of computer experience: ( )

  1. I was born in a shotgun shack with no electricity. This is the first time I've seen one.
  2. (I've used it for web surfing, email, chat, instant messaging, and/or writing papers. )
  3. I've used desktop publishing software like Photoshop, and some digital video editing.
  4. I've made some interactive projects in Flash or Shockwave that involved scripting.
  5. My crib was in the server room. I program in C++ to relax. I love sed and awk.

2. Please select the one which describes your attitude about using computers in the arts: ( )

  1. Making art is about pouring my emotions onto canvas. I can't see how a computer figures in that. Get me out of here!
  2. Using computers in art might be theoretically interesting, but all the digital art I've seen has been really ugly and cold. You'll have to convince me.
  3. I oughta learn some computer skills, so that when I graduate, I can get a day job to support my painting career. So I'm ready to learn some new skills if they're commercially applicable. At least it will get my parents off my back.
  4. The computer is one of many available tools, good for some things. I might use it in some art projects, and not in others. Digital art sounds interesting.
  5. (Computers are the most significant force shaping life today, and portend an essential new direction for the arts. This is the future!)

3. What is a computer?

I think computer is a machine that has same function with human brain. Only the difference is it cannot think or feel, which means they only work according to our command.

4. What are computers good at doing? What are computers good for, and why?

they are good at organizing and it helps to save time and adds various effects together which can produce bigger impact on artwork.

5. What are computers bad at doing? What do computers make difficult, and why?

it cannot creat new as human can do and cannot act flexibly. if there` s some problem, it makes error until we fix even though it` s smaill mistake. Also if it is erased than there` s no way to recover.

6. What new possibilities does the computer make possible for artists?

It can make detail expresssions ina short time and mix various effects together. Also it can make movements like most of animation uses.

7. What does it mean to use the computer as a tool, versus use it as a medium?

Computer can be a great help to artists . Sometimes they can make what human cannot do easily. That does not mean they creat something by their own will so computer is a tool for some artists. Also computer itself can be a medium for art work. As one of the artists, Nam June Paik uses vedeo for his artwork, computer itself can be a medium as we use a canvas or paper for drawing.

8. What is the most interesting artwork you've seen that uses a computer, and why?

I` ve seen a computer artwork in NY. I could see various scenes through the monitor and it looked like a digital art, I guess. However, one of the most interesting scene was flying man. A lot of human figures were jumping in the empty space and they began to fly through the air. Everyone was towaridng same destination and it gave me strong impression. Actually it was abstract simple abstract artwork, but it gave me an image that includes Escape or Final destination of Human.
