The following education examples, written with the School Library Media program in mind, were created for various classes during the course of my graduate studies. Contained on this page, you will find examples of the following:
- Book Talk: Teen Vampires
Book Talks are short teasers for books aimed at engaging reluctant readers. This particular book talk was an idea I had for an Autumn series on the supernatural which ties in with Halloween. In keeping with the popularity of the Twilight series, teen-age vampires are the subject of this talk.
- QuickTime Movie (with audio) - This book talk presentation was made live, however, after the semester was over, I made my talk into a QuickTime movie to share. Recording Book Talks and having them available to students via the Library website would enable students to access them on their own schedule.
- Book Talk Handout - In conjunction with the live presentation, providing the students with a handout, complete with book titles, author names, and cover art, as well as a brief description, gives them the information they need to find the books in the library. In addition, these sheets can be left in an area for students looking for similar books.
- Author Brochure: J. K. Rowling
This brochure provides information about the author, as well as brief snippets regarding the books in the Harry Potter series, and is intended to encourage readers. As an added bonus, I created a bookmark as part of the brochure with a list of similar writers to aid students in exploring other authors.
- Information Sheet: Downloading Music
Students are often not aware of the laws surrounding files and music available on the Internet. In order to educate them, and help them know how they can safely download and share music files, I created an information sheet detailing this information.
- Sample Collection: Sexual Orientation
One of the most overlooked areas in a library collection is material for the gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual community. However, these individuals are often in need of reliable, accurate and non-judgemental answers to their questions. This sample collection was developed as a group project for K-12.
- Lesson Plan: The Piano Lesson
This sample contains two lesson plans as part of curriculum developed in collaboration with teachers for students reading "The Piano Lesson", by August Wilson. These lessons were developed as a group project with one being an introductory lesson regarding the importance of ancestry, and the second a culminating lesson in the form of a history fair. The majority of the History Fair lesson plan was what I created as part of this team, which begins on page 5.
- Virtual Tour: The Piano Lesson
This PowerPoint slide walks students through important aspects of the Hill District in 1936, which is the setting of August Wilson's "The Piano Lesson". The linked file is a PDF of the group presentation.
- Scope & Sequence
This scope and sequence is a framework for developing a plan to teach information literacy to students from kindergarten through graduation. This scope and sequence was developed as part of a group project and incorporates the Pennsylvania Academic Standards, as well as the Information Literacy Standards and benchmarks.
- Advocating to School Board
As with any school library program, advocating to the school board and the community comes with the position. These items were a collaborative effort with two classmates to create a ten minute presentation, with audio, to inform the board of the statistics from three different schools.
- PowerPoint Presentation (with audio) - I created the script and audio for the opening and closing slides, as well as the script, audio and slides for the Laurel Junior High School segment.
Note: This is a PowerPoint 2008 file, and not a PDF, so you can access the audio.
- Handout - The handout was simply intended to remind the board of our presentation and to invite them to some upcoming library events at each school.
- Learning Unit: Using the Internet as a Research Source
This unit was created for the purpose of familiarizing students with various aspects of the internet, including conducting searches. In addition, this will help students be aware of the possible dangers of
using the internet and warn them about predators.
- Technology Integration Model (TIP Model) - details the rationale for the learning unit and identifies objectives, strategies and assessments.
- PowerPoint Presentation - presentation slides identify library resources, possible search engines, internet acceptable use policies and warnings, as well as login instructions and search tips, among other information.
- WebQuest - The webquest guides the students through the steps for their individual projects which, in this case, is to complete a scavenger hunt and find "lost" research materials both on the internet, as well as in the school library.
- Scavenger Hunt - This is the companion piece to the WebQuest with the specific questions and information that the students need to find.
- WebQuest: Dewey Decimal System
This lesson plan familiarizes students with the Dewey Decimal System in a fun, interactive way, while also getting students practice using computers and the internet.
