Gladiators Gladiators were professional fighters in ancient Rome. They were trained specifically to fight in violent confrontations for the entertainment of audiences. The ancient practice inspired an immensely popular film in 2000 called, simply, Gladiator. Starring Russell Crowe, the film won 5 Academy Awards.
