CELEBRATING AND REMEMBERING FREELAND BUSINESSES

This page is an attempt to list businesses that are operating now or that have operated in living memory. An earlier version of this page began as my brother and I were sitting up late one night during a visit to Freeland, and we decided to see how many businesses we could remember from the 1950s-1970s. Some time later, that original list was revised with information from Charlie Stumpf, Charlie Reczkowski and various Freelanders and e-mail correspondents, and I extended the scope back to the 1940s, as well as beginning to add some newer businesses and even current ones to the list. Revisions to these lists are ongoing. Additions and corrections would be very welcome; please send e-mail.

As I get more information about these various businesses and organizations I'm adding it to my project files. It would be helpful, for example, to know when these various businesses began, who the proprietors were, when the businesses folded if they're no longer in operation, or who they were taken over by if they passed to other owners. I'm in the process of revamping this page a bit to include more of that information when I have it.

I've put the entries in alphabetical order within each category. If I couldn't remember a name or location, I've left a blank line to be filled in later (hopefully). This information is only as reliable as my memory and those of my correspondents. If you see something you think or know is incorrect, please send me that information and I'll post it on this page. If you've sent me information and it hasn't been added to this page yet, please don't hesitate to send a simple reminder. You don't have to resend the information, but just a reminder will help me to fish your e-mail out of my files and get the information onto the web. For this page at present I'm not including entire narratives, just some basic information about who, what, where and when, but I'd be grateful for ANY information about these businesses that you can share.

When I was a kid in Freeland in the 1950s, there were small family-owned food stores all over town, in addition to a couple of supermarkets (Genetti's and the A&P). Nearly all have disappeared, but a few such as the Corner Market are still in operation, and most are still remembered around town.
