_design.

During my undergraduate years at Virginia Tech, I studied Architecture, interior, graphic, and industrial design. Aside from the specifics of what I learned, I feel that my over all appreciation for all aspects of design is what I am most glad I was able to take with me.

The first 3 projects below are images of physical board layouts. These range from student competitions, month long design studies, and entire interior design layouts that included complete architectural drawing sets of the space.

The focus on each project encompassed both interior and exterior design, Technical drawings such as floor plans, sections, and elevations. Programming documents, material selection and finish scheduling were often incorporated. 3d modeling and rendering of the environments and graphical layouts culminated each project.

idec 8-hour competition

hotle project

“The Interior Design Educators Council sponsors the 10th annual IDEC Student Design Competition in 2004 to challenge students in interior design programs to participate in an international competition to meet three goals:  for students to strive for excellence in design, for students to explore design of a moveable public space, and for students to work in teams to accomplish their design work.”

The IDEC competition is an intense 8-hour charette involving students in teams of two from universities across the country. We were introduced to our project at the beginning of the 8 hours, 2004’s project was to design be an exhibit on sustainable environments. My Teammate and I used our computer modeling experience and graphic design skills to our advantage in finishing the flowing design. Our “Renew Your Mind” entry received 1st place at Virginia Tech and has moved on to get 4th place at the international competition.

hotel design

dd

Dawn To Dusk was a fictional hotel located in Seattle, Washington. The class was given an exterior shell and asked to come up with a concept for the 8-story hotels main lobby. My solution included a rectilinear off grid scheme with understated lighting and a sleek modern interior. The following boards display the final lobby’s floor plan, renderings, and custom designed furniture details.

cirque du soleil headquarters

hotle project

The Cirque Du Soleil Project was a unique opportunity to work with a very unconventional client. The project took the form of Cirque’s headquarters on the 14th floor of a New York City high rise. My concept was to create an interior that was as mysterious and exhilarating as the clients world famous shows, yet still was an efficient and functional work setting. Extensive programming of the clients needs was completed first in order to design a space that fit their needs accurately. Next the interior was planned as finishes and materials that fit Cirque Du Soleil’s eccentric nature were researched. The final renderings were then displayed on the subsequent boards.

just a simple hand rendering On even my most recent projects I call upon my sketching and hand rendering skills for process work and quick visualization.

gallery design

Translations gallery. Shown in the photograph is a sketch gallery I designed for a one week showing at Virginia Techs architecture hall lobby. The exhibit used copper wiring hung parallel to wooden slats to “float” photos in front of sketches. The Translations gallery showcased visual recordings by my fellow students and I during our six-week study abroad through Europe.

I also enjoy working with 2d graphics and layouts. This image is a graphic I designed for a Virginia tech web page ran in 2001. Go hokies!
