Wardrobe, 2004

found wardrobe, old velvet curtains and fabric, fish, monofilament, hooks, light

I spent the summer of 2004 living in Pont Aven, a small town just upstream from the southern
coast of the French province Bretagne. The fish in this installation were collected from a local fisherman
who would sell them daily out of a large cart. For the second installation of this work, in a gallery space,
the piece functioned as a performance. The fish were hung frozen at the start of the show. As the night
continued, the fish began to thaw as a lingering stench intensified. Within two hours, I was asked to
remove the fish.
