Rebecca Cherian

Rebecca Cherian has been the Co-Principal Trombonist with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra since 1989. Ms. Cherian began her professional career at the age of 16 as trombonist with the San Jose Symphony. She appeared as a soloist with the San Francisco Symphony after winning their Young Musician’s Award.  Ms. Cherian later performed as Principal of the Springfield , MA Symphony and The Rhode Island Philharmonic. She studied at the California Institute of the Arts and received her Master’s Degree from  the Yale School of Music.  Ms. Cherian is a founding member of the International Women’s Brass Conference. She has taught at the Hartt School of Music, Weslyan University and The University of Connecticut.  She has been on the faculty of Carnegie Mellon’s School of Music since 1993.

Peter Sullivan

Principal Trombone

Peter Sullivan, Principal Trombonist with the PSO since the 1999-2000 season. In 1985 he joined the Montréal Symphony and in 1990 was appointed to the position of Principal Trombone by Charles Dutoit. Formerly a member of the Calgary Philharmonic and the Toronto Symphony, Sullivan has an active schedule as soloist and chamber musician. He has given solo recitals throughout Canada , in Europe , and in the United States . He has performed with the Summit Brass and the Music of the Baroque of Chicago. Since 1993 he has been a member of the Grand Teton Festival Orchestra, a group comprised of orchestral musicians from North America 's leading orchestras. Mr. Sullivan is a native of Timmins , Ontario . He studied at Ottawa and McGill universities as well as at the Aspen School of Music. His former teachers include Theodora Griffith, Per Brewig, and Christian Lindberg. From 1986-98 he served on the faculty of McGill University and currently serves on the faculty of Duquesne University , as well as Carnegie Mellon.

 

 

Murray Crewe

Principal Bass Trombone

Murray Crewe Bass Trombonist of the PSO, began his symphonic career in 1984, joining the Orchestre Symphonique de Quebec, in Quebec City .  In 1987 he became the first Canadian bass trombonist to win an audition for a major American orchestra, joining the Utah Symphony in Salt Lake City .  In 1989 he joined the Toronto Symphony, performing both in Toronto and around the world before joining the Pittsburgh Symphony in the fall of 1993.

 

 

Carl Jackson

Carl Jackson, Principal Trombonist of the River City Brass Band, is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University where he studied trombone under the late Byron McCulloh, former bass trombonist of the PSO.  From 1982-1984 Carl served as Bass Trombonist with the RCBB.  He moved to the Principal Trombone role at the beginning of the 1984-85 season.  Carl currently serves on the faculties of Carnegie Mellon University , the University of Pittsburgh , and the High School for the Creative and Performing Arts.



 

Glenn Wayland

Bass Trombone

Glenn Wayland, Bass Trombonist for the Pittsburgh Opera, Pittsburgh Ballet and Civic Light Opera, grew up in the Hill District of Pittsburgh.  Mr. Wayland is currently an Instrumental Music Teacher in the Upper St. Clair School District .  He graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with both a Bachelors of Fine Arts and a Masters of Fine Arts.  Later he returned to Carnegie Mellon where he earned a teaching certificate in Music Education.  In addition to studying with Byron McCulloh, former Bass Trombonist with the PSO, Mr. Wayland’s interest in jazz trombone



 

Timothy Adams

Principal Timpanist
Pittsburgh Opera Orchestra


 

 

Timothy Adams, Principal Timpanist with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and a faculty member at the Brevard Music Center , Adams previously held the positions of Principal Timpanist with the Indianapolis Symphony and the Florida Philharmonic and principal percussionist with the Eastern Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also been on the faculties of West Virginia University and Butler University . Adams has soloed with numerous orchestras and has presented master classes and clinics throughout the U.S. and Europe . Adams completed both his undergraduate studies and master's program at the Cleveland Institute of Music.



 

Paul Evans

Percussionist
River City Brass Band


 

 

Paul Evans percussionist, graduated from Duquesne University in 1988, with a B.M. in Jazz Performance. While at Duquesne, he studied privately with Lenny Rogers and Don Liuzzi. Evans went on to earn an M.M. at Temple University , studying with Alan Able of the Philadelphia Orchestra. He is currently section percussionist with the River City Brass Band. A former extra percussionist with the Pittsburgh Symphony, he maintains an active freelance schedule in the Pittsburgh area.
