Professors Taylor and Achim (Chemistry, CMU) win a 2017 Samuel and Emma Winters Foundation grant to support their research dense decoration of DNA origami nanostructures with synthetic peptide nucleic acids (PNA). Many thanks to the Winters Foundation.
The MMBL won an internal Dean's Grant Award to purchase an environmentally-controlled microscope for total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy. Installation and initial training are complete, and the microscope is now up and running in the main lab in Hamerschlag Hall.
The Kulkarni Lab (HCII, website) and Taylor Lab have received seed funding from the Manufacturing Futures Initiative at Carnegie Mellon University. Both labs will be working together to address workforce training in the Pittsburgh region. Many thanks to the Manufacturing Futures Initiative!

To support the development of a new project-based manufacturing course in Mechanical Engineering, Professor Taylor was honored with the Donald L. and Rhonda Struminger Faculty Fellowship in Mechanical Engineering.
Four undergraduate students, Jade Crockem, Kelly Underwood, Sarah Karp, and Shivang Chordia, are performing course development support this Spring semester. The course, "Modern Manufacturing in Steeltown" is planned to be offered in Spring 2018.
Alex Kwakye has recently joined our lab to perform his Masters research. Also a very belated welcome to Mitchell Harmatz, who joined the lab this summer as our first undergraduate researcher!
Professor Taylor and collaborators in genetics and cardiology at Stanford university publish work identifying hotspots within myosin with higher than expected proportions of pathogenic genetic variants associated with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. This work was published on May 5, 2016 in PNAS at http://www.pnas.org/content/113/24/6701.
