So I’m driving in to work this morning and there is this very impatient driver in a huge navy blue Toyota SUV behind me and we’re stuck in traffic as we approach one of the famous Qatari “roundabouts”. I’m in the left lane and so is he. There are two trucks to my right in the only other lane. This SOB pulls to his right and tries to jam his SUV between me and the trucks, clipping my right rear bumper. He then makes a sudden right turn in front of one of the trucks and “escapes” on an exit road. HE RUNS !
The wiener hits and runs. I’m sittin’ there going “WTF!?” and barely get my wits together fast enough to see his license plate number and write it down. So I know better (yes really, I do) than to chase this guy down for a confrontation. So I finish driving into work and teach my morning class. Then I get in touch with our resident Arabic translator, Abdullah Ibrahim, who is supposed to help us take care of issues where CMU people are required to interact with Arabic-speaking officials. We take a trip down to the traffic police station where with his help we “make a report”. While I’m there I learn that the plate number I got matches the description of the SOB, oops sorry, SUV that hit me. Now guess what...the guy just dropped his car insurance. So the police are going to call this person in to the police office to see if the damage on my right rear bumper matches damage to his left front bumper (see the asterisks in the drawing above.) If it’s a match, the guy’s in Qatari doo-doo. I should find out what’s up sometime tomorrow. In the meantime, the car rental agency seems to be understanding...we’ll see what the final end result is.
