Competition Team

Many people think that one has to be a very experienced and fabulous dancer to compete; we are hoping to debunk this myth.  Competitions are arranged so that every couple competes against other couples who have about the same amount of experience.  There is a category called "Newcomer" that only couples who have been dancing for less than six months can compete in.  This level is a lot of fun, and we encourage new dancers to join while they can still dance in the "Newcomer" level.

We are looking for more competitors to join our team.  Everyone is welcome!  Most competitions start on a Friday night and run until Sunday morning.  Many competitions are nearby so you don't have to worry about taking a long trip.  Also, if you are worried about the cost, keep in mind that we often fund housing and registration fees for one competition per semester.  Lastly, don't worry if you do not have a partner.  One can often find a partner from another school at a competition.

We have a great time, and we want to share this with everyone!  You will be amazed at what you have been missing - we promise!

Membership Requirements

Active members of our competition team take technique classes and, of course, go to competitions.  Luckily, being on the east coast, CMU is within driving distance of a great number of regional competitions.  Below is information on our professional workshops and also a list of competitions within driving distances from Pittsburgh, the estimated driving time, registration information and additional links.  If you are interested in going to any of these comps, let Julie know ASAP so she can help you secure housing.

Also note that all competitors must be members of USABDA (United States Amateur Ballroom Dance Association).  This is different from the CMU semester registration.  To register, go to http://www.usabda.org/application.html, fill out the form, and send it in.  It takes some time for the membership cards to come in, so if you are planning on competing, get your registration in as soon as possible.

Professional Workshops

These classes are taught by professional coaches.  They are meant to teach skills beyond mere social dancing.  It is geared towards better dancing and even competitive dancing.  The beginner session will be open to all members of the club.  The advanced session, however, will be limited to INVITED-BY-INSTRUCTOR members of the club.  Please DO NOT DIRECTLY QUESTION the professional instructor regarding the status of invitation.  Members doing so will be warned and might be denied admission to the general session.  Here is the professional workshop schedule.
