NAACP: National Association for the Advancement of Colored People

The NAACP was formed in 1909 by a group of black and white citizens appalled at the injustices that some Americans suffered solely because of their race. It is the largest and most influential civil rights organization in the country. The basic strength of the NAACP derives from its historic victories in courts, Congress, and state legislatures. To keep pace with changing times, the NAACP has launched a number of dynamic social programs that are speeding its march toward victory over racial hatred, bigotry, and poverty.
