Cognitive tutoring is a tutoring system developed by Carnegie Mellon University. This software, published by Carnegie Learning Inc, is marketed to students from the middle school to the post secondary level. It is based on over 20 years of research into how students think, learn and apply new knowledge in math.

The system is built on cognitive modeling, which is an area of computer science that simulates human problem solving and other mental tasks. The cognitive tutoring software gauges a student’s knowledge about a subject and then provides curriculum tailored to fit their level of difficulty. This program stresses problem solving and reasoning in mathematics but also in real world situations as well.

As of today, this software has been used by half a million students in 2300 schools across America.
