CMU Gun Club guide for Experienced Members in the supervision of new shooters 1. Preparation. Make sure that the new shooter has received and read the Safety Rules printed by the club. Make sure that the new shooter is wearing the proper protective gear. Observe the new shooter to make reasonably sure that he/she is not under the influence of alcohol or drugs. 2. Review the parts of the firearm and how they work. An example of this for a revolver is attached. The experienced member is reminded to heed safety rule number 5 "Know how the gun operates and how to use it safely." 3. Illustrate the operation of the gun, specifically : loading, cocking, uncocking, unloading, safety, or any other operation specific to that firearm 4. Review the three fundamental rules of gun safety 1. Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction. On the firing range this means the gun must always be kept pointed downrange. 2. Always assume the gun is LOADED. Keep your gun unloaded with the action open until ready to use. Immediately check whether a gun is loaded when you pick it up (even if you were the one to put it down). 3. Always keep your finger off the trigger until you're ready to shoot. You must overcome the natural tendency to rest your finger on the trigger 5. Explain the range procedure and review the range safety rules. 8. Know your target and what is beyond it 9. Wear eye and ear protection 10. Never fire or handle your firearm when there is someone downrange. Your gun should be unloaded, action open, and on the bench 11. Never cross the firing line or go downrange while fire is in progress or while anyone is handling a firearm. 12. Obey the rules of the range. 6. Explain and illustrate (without ammunition) the fundamentals of shooting, including: Position, Grip, Breath Control, Sight alignment, Trigger squeeze, Follow though The two most important fundamentals are Sight alignment and Trigger squeeze. The other four fundamentals assist in achieving proper sight alignment and trigger squeeze. An example of this step for handguns is attached. 8. Allow the new shooter to handle and dry fire the weapon. Observe that the rules of gun safety are observed. Do not use ammunition. 9. Explain the procedures in case of a malfunction. Describe the following: misfire, hangfire, sqib load, jam. i.e. For a hangfire hold the gun pointed in a safe direction for thirty seconds, if it fails to go off it is a misfire and may be removed. For a squib load explain the dangers of barrel obstructions and how they should NEVER be cleared by firing an additional shot. If ANYTHING unusual is noticed when a shot is fires, keep the gun pointed in a safe direction as you unload the gun and inspect it while keeping the action open. 10. Illustrate the shooting fundamentals using live ammunition. Remember to set a good example regarding gun safety 11. Allow the new shooter to fire using live ammunition under your close supervision. Critique as necessary, but do not embarrass or intimidate the new shooter. SAE 2/23/94
