About the Symposium

On Thursday April 23rd, 2009 the Graduate Biomedical Engineering Society and the Biomedical Engineering department will host the fourth annual Biomedical Engineering and Biotechnology Research Symposium (BEBRS). The symposium brings together student researchers working on biomedical and biotechnical problems from all corners of campus, with the aims of disseminating scientific knowledge, fostering collaboration, and showcasing the cutting-edge and interdisciplinary research that is being pursued at Carnegie Mellon University.

Keynote speaker

We are very excited to welcome Professor Shu Chien as this year's keynote speaker. His presentation is titled, Biomedical Sciences and Engineering in the New Century.

Abstract
As we enter the 21st century, the highest priority in people's mind is health. The improvement of health and quality of life depends on advances in biomedical sciences and biomedical engineering. In recent years, there have been dramatic progresses in modern biology (e.g., sequencing of the human genome). The analysis and synthesis of the vast amount of biological information requires the application of the emerging new concepts and technologies in engineering. An integrative approach is essential for the generation of new insights into the mechanisms of physiological regulation in health and the development of innovative methods for diagnosis, treatment and prevention of important human diseases. Interdisciplinary research and education at the interface of biology, medicine and engineering and the collaboration among academia, industry and government are crucial for the advancement of health and quality of life of people in the new century.

Abstract Submission

Abstract submission now closed for BEBRS 2009.

Resume submission

GBMES would like to request a resume from all undergraduate and graduate students in the Carnegie Mellon BME department to be included in a resume book that will be distributed to symposium sponsors for the Biomedical Engineering and Biotechnology Symposium. Please visit the Symposium Resume Submission submission requirements and instructions. Note that resumes which do not follow these guidelines will not be accepted into the resume book.

Location and Directions

BEBRS 2009 will take place in the Grand Room, located on the third floor of Posner Hall, home to the Tepper School of Business (labeled 17 on the map, and colored red). The Grand Room offers state of the art facilities and a sprawling view of campus and the Oakland skyline. Located centrally on Carnegie Mellon's campus, Posner Hall is only minutes from the Biomedical Engineering office in Doherty Hall. Street parking (may) be available on Margaret Morrison Street, Tech Avenue, and Frew Street, though attendees arriving by car are advised to park in the parking deck next to the University Center (label P7 on the map and colored purple). Bus routes which stop at Forbes and Beeler (next to the parking deck) include: the 56U, 59U, 61A, 61B, 61C, 61D, 61F, and 69A.
