Sweeping and Submitting from the Closed Guard
Tips for all situations:
- Keep your opponent tight to you; space is bad
- Pull down on your opponent’s head and arms at all times to break his posture
- Try to trap one of your opponent’s arms
- You always have to open your guard to attack with a sweep or submission
- Remember that your hip movement is the most important part of every guard attack
- Constantly attack from the guard
Static drilling:
- Sweeps
- Hip bump sweep
- Flower sweep
- Scissor sweep
- Submissions
- Guillotine
- Triangle
- Armbar
- Combinations

Dynamic drilling:
- One partner takes closed guard and attacks with any sweep or submission; other partner defends and attempts to pass
- Approximately 2 minute rounds
- Vary partners and positions
