Side Control Positional Tips

The side control is a powerful position in grappling. Your opponent's movement is severely limited as he is forced to bear the majority of your weight. There are more possible attacks from side control than any other dominant position. Our instructor Andrew shares some tips on using this position below.

- Do not let your opponent get posture. Kill his posture.

- If your opponent's arm is across your left hip, crush your left hip down onto it.

- Alternatively slide your right hip across it, pinning it against his head.

- If your opponent's left arm is across your throat, block his elbow with your right hand and move your own head down under his armpit.

- Focus all of your weight on one point. A one pound screwdriver hurts a lot more than a one pound cookie sheet.
