Passing and Leglocks Against the Closed Guard
Tips for breaking a closed guard:
- Don’t use your elbows to dig and force; use your hips and gravity to shake the guard off easily
- Keep your hands posted on your opponent’s body at all times
- Make sure that your hands are posted in front of your head so that you can’t be pulled forward
Tips for passing an open guard:
- Don’t rely too heavily on leglocks; use them sparingly to surprise the opponent
- Keep pressure when passing guard
- You must pin your opponent’s hips before you can pass
Static drilling:
- Closed guard breaks
- Standing shaking guard break
- Kneeling shaking guard break
- Open guard passes
- Leg on shoulder pass
- Rear knee pass
- Open guard leglocks
Dynamic drilling:
- One partner enters closed guard and attempts to pass; other partner defends with any sweep or submission
- Approximately 2 minute rounds
- Vary partners and positions
Targeted rolling:
- Roll with judo rules with respect to pins, i.e. an unbreakable pin of 25 seconds is the same as a tap
