Defending and Escaping from Dominant Positions

Tips for all positions:

  • Keep your elbows tucked in tight
  • Push with the elbow and forearm, not the hand
  • Turn towards your opponent, not away
  • Try the bridge escape when your hips are close to your opponent's hips
  • Try the shrimp escape when there is space to scoot your hips out
  • Bridging sets up the shrimp escape; shrimping sets up the bridge escape

List of dominant positions:

  • Mount
  • Side control
  • North/south
  • Scarfhold

Static drilling:

  • From each position, teach and drill both the bridge escape and shrimp escape

Dynamic drilling:

  • One partner establishes and holds the pin; other partner escapes using any escape
  • Approximately 2 minute rounds
  • Vary partners and positions

Targeted rolling:

  • Roll with judo rules with respect to pins, i.e. an unbreakable pin of 25 seconds is the same as a tap
