Defending and Escaping from Dominant Positions
Tips for all positions:
- Keep your elbows tucked in tight
- Push with the elbow and forearm, not the hand
- Turn towards your opponent, not away
- Try the bridge escape when your hips are close to your opponent's hips
- Try the shrimp escape when there is space to scoot your hips out
- Bridging sets up the shrimp escape; shrimping sets up the bridge escape
List of dominant positions:
- Mount
- Side control
- North/south
- Scarfhold
Static drilling:
- From each position, teach and drill both the bridge escape and shrimp escape
Dynamic drilling:
- One partner establishes and holds the pin; other partner escapes using any escape
- Approximately 2 minute rounds
- Vary partners and positions
Targeted rolling:
- Roll with judo rules with respect to pins, i.e. an unbreakable pin of 25 seconds is the same as a tap
