| 2005 Kumite Classic Jiu-Jitsu Tournament
Saturday, May 28, 2005 Results CMU Grappling Club was proud to be able to send two of its members to the largest grappling tournament in the Pittsburgh area. Although both competitors lost, they fought very well and showed great heart. Below are written descriptions of their matches. Randy Jones - Men's No-Gi Intermediate - 160 lb
Randy and his opponent quickly clinched and grappled standing. Randy was eventually taken down via trip and secured half guard. Randy spun to full guard and secured his opponent's arm. Randy attempted an armbar but was countered. Randy fought back to the guard and attempted the same technique. It was again countered. Randy's guard was passed into side control. Randy immediately bridged off his opponent. He was unable to secure side control, however, and his opponent quickly stood up. Randy followed him up and pulled guard. Randy again attempted an armbar but was countered. Randy then attempted an inverted kneebar as his opponent started stand but failed and was mounted. Randy was attacked with a mounted triangle which he escaped out the back door. He attempted to take his opponent's back but was not quick enough. His opponent scrambled to his feet. Randy stood up and went for a standing kimura but was taken down again. His guard was quickly passed, and he was once again attacked by a mounted triangle. As Randy again attempted to escape out the back door, his opponent rolled with him into the guard and tightened the triangle. He then swept Randy back into the mount and finished the triangle. Randy tapped and lost his match. Jimmy Cerra - Men's No-Gi Beginner - 190 lb
Jimmy aggressively clinched with his larger opponent. He unbalanced his opponent and nearly took him down, but he was countered and reversed with a trip takedown into side control. Jimmy kept his cool and worked methodically from the bottom. He created space and worked for half guard. He then got an underhook and established full guard. From the full guard Jimmy attempted several sweeps but was countered each time. Eventually Jimmy had his guard passed. Jimmy nearly gave his back after the pass but was able to prevent his opponent from securing his hooks. Jimmy ended up back in side control. His opponent managed to apply an americana that ended the match. |
