Local Attractions

Walk-to attractions (i.e., lunch time).

Carnegie Museums (around the corner). Especially check out the dinosaurs, the hall of minerals (much better than it sounds) and the 1:1 scale models of famous buildings in the hall of architecture (nothing was too good for Andrew's plebians).
Phipps Conservatory (across the lawn). Site of the 2009 G20 meeting. New, huge, award-winning rain forest exhibit. Runs on a power cell, which is why the G20 visited. Do it with lunch---nice, sunny cafe and sidewalk dining.
Schenley Park (next door). Lots of wooded trails. Visitor center nice cafe with canyon view patio. Nice for lunch.

Pittsburgh Pirates are away during the conference.
Gateway clipper "steamboat" tours. Open evenings. Kitchy alternative to Pirates game for brain-dead revelry after long conference sessions.
Point State Park and Fort Pitt Museum. This was a focal point in the French-Indian war. The museum is much better than they manage to show on their web page.
Duquestne Incline and famous view of the Golden Triangle from Mount Washington. One of America's best urban views. Really! Restaurants with views on top. E.g., Monterey Bay Fish Grotto

Strip district. Wacky, wonderful several blocks of real Pittsburgh. Lively on Saturday, dead on Sunday! There you will find the huge Heinz Pittsburgh History Center.
South side/Carson Street. Long entertainment street with atmospheric red-brick buildings anchored by Station Square downtown and South Side Works in Homestead.
Squirrel Hill. Lots of non-chain restaurants. Short bus ride or half-hour walk from campus.
Shadyside/East-Liberty

Church Brew Works. Exactly what it sounds like. Spectacularly unique. Recommended!
South Side Works Hofrauhaus. New. Actually licensed by Munich Hofbrauhaus. Review.
Sharp Edge Beer Emporium.
