As with all of Carnegie Mellon's work, the 2007 Solar Decathlon House was developed with an interdisciplinary approach. The School of Architecture has provided a clear vision and foundation for the house and it's construction. Through several iterations, the house's current design was finally selected to highlight innovative concepts that would appeal to the large audience that will pass through it both on the Mall and at it's long term home at Powdermill Nature Reserve.
To address concerns over usability and creating a livable space, the School of Design has been given the task of designing the interior. From basic aesthetic concerns, to more functional items such as furniture and appliances, students are addressing concerns while putting forth new and invigorating concepts.
Additional support has come from the College of Fine Arts with art students making sure the house's green-scapes are both functional and attractive, playing with the idea of embedded technology as well as integration with nature. The Drama Department has brought many of its strengths in spatial design and lighting as well, helping present the 2007 house in a thought provoking way.
All of these elements tie together with the 2007 Carnegie Mellon Solar Decathlon House, showing the strengths of our multiple schools when they work together.
