Course Projects

  1. The first project involves the investigation of the issues associated with a specific health care industry problem from the perspective of either hospita ls, HMOs, state and federal governments, or consumer. The report should address who are the players, what is the problem, why is this a problem, what proposal s have been made for resolution, what is the status of the proposal, and what is the role of IT. Examples include physician profiling, HEDIS reporting, claims administration, and disease management. Discussion of the role of IT requires identification of major vendors of software products for a specific h ealth care industry problem, and evaluation of the product based on well-define d criteria. Examples include vendors of products for clinical decision suppo rt, hospital information systems, pharmacy systems, and patient-monitoring systems.

  2.

Please do not consider topics that are scheduled for class discussion.

This report should particularly emphasize the evaluation component by

    (1) analyzing the requirements of the problem,
    (2) identifying the major software vendors who have potential solutions,
    (3) developing appropriate criteria for evaluation,
    (4) presenting the evaluation in tabular form comparing the vendors on each criteria, and
    (5) providing a recommendation based on your evaluation.

The report, composed as a Word document in 12 point and double spaced, should not exceed 15 pages. It should be justified on both sides and include page numbering, appropriate section titles, and references.

Submissions should include a hard copy of the Word document and presentation slides, and a copy on disk (to include on the course web pages).

  3. The second project explores the role of IT in providing an effective solut ion strategy for a significant health care industry problem. Examples include t elemedicine for specialized and high quality care to rural populations, and EDI in simplifying and reducing costs associated with claims processing. The proje ct should be accompanied with a prototype implementation of the proposed IT sol ution to the problem. Examples include an integration of microsoft office produ cts into one working system (e.g., relational database linked with Excel and po werpoint), and an imaging application on the internet.
