The data are from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey for 1996. The MEPS is a random survey of Americans focusing on their health care spending, health status, and various demographics. There is a website for the MEPS here .

The variables, in columns, from left to right, are:

Variable Description
age The person's age
sex The person's sex, 1=male, 0=female
income The person's family income in dollars
employed The person's employment status, 1=employed, 0=not
insured The person's insurance status, 1=insured, 0=not
health The person's perceived health status
1 Excellent
2 Very Good
3 Good
4 Fair
5 Poor
spending The person's health spending (whether paid by the person or by an insurer)
