Cole, M., & Cole, S. (2001). The Development of Children, 4th edition. Worth Publishers: NY, NY.

Objectives

* To become familiar with the basic facts of human development.

* To understand how psychological theory guides research on human development.

* To understand the research methods used in the study of development.

* To develop skills in reading, interpreting and evaluating research and evidence.

* To appreciate how the findings of basic research can aid in the solution of real life problems.

Course Requirements

* Class attendance is expected. Students will be held responsible for all information covered in the during class. Lectures and videos are designed to supplement not necessarily repeat material presented in the text.

*The course is divided into 3 Units. Unit 1 covers Principles, Methods, and Infancy, Unit 2 covers Early Childhood, and Unit 3covers Middle Childhood and Adolescence.

* After each unit there will be an in-class exam consisting of short answer questions. At the end of the semester there will be a cumulative final. Only 3 exams will count toward your grade and each will be worth 50 points. You can miss one or drop one.

* There will be 4 written assignments. Only 3 assignments will count toward your grade and each will be worth 25 points You can miss one or drop one. Important information regarding the assignments will be discussed during class periods.

* There will be 15 in-class activities. Only 10 will count toward your grade and each will be worth 5 points. You can miss or drop 5. You must be in class on the day of the activity to receive points.

Class Policies

Make-up Exams: There will be no make-up exams - if you miss one of the in-class exams you will have to do the cumulative final. If you miss 2 in-class exams you will be allowed to make-up one of them providing you have a doctor's note or some other written documentation to justify missing the exam.

Contesting your grade: After an exam or assignment is returned you will have one week to contest your grade. You must submit your complaint in writing to the instructor with the exam or assignment. Please check your returned work carefully - occasionally there can be errors in assigning points and totalling the score.

Cheating and Plagiarism: You are responsible for being familiar with the university standard for academic honesty and plagiarism. Please see the CMU Student Handbook for information. You may discuss assignments with other students but all written work bust be done independently. When citing material, the full reference must be given except for the textbook (Textbook, p. 154), or other assigned readings (e.g., Harris, p. 52)

Departmental Research Requirement

 The psychology department requires that all students in 200-level courses have the opportunity to participate in ongoing psychology research. To fulfill this requirement, you can either a) participate in 3 experiments before the last day of classes or b) write a series of short papers. Professor Clark will be coming to class on January 18th to explain the research requirement procedure and to hand out forms for you to complete.

Failure to complete this requirement will result in a grade of incomplete in the class. I do not have the authority to waive this requirement or change your incomplete grade - this is managed by the department.
