Competing Criteria for Personal Identity
i.e. different ways of answering the question,
'why the same person?'

1. Continuity of Consciousness
I am the same person because my experience linked up
I wake up where I went to sleep
As we noted, break in continuity linked with fear of death

2. Memory
I am the same person because I have memories of my past
and not of experience of others

I remember being in Baltimore in 1980, so I am the same person as the professor talking here to you

3. Bodily Identity
my body, like that of any living thing, has continuity

All 3 conditions so obvious as to hardly need explanation

At present these tests give same answer.

All the interesting problems arise when the tests conflict.
