Problem Statement

The majority of products for the deaf and the hearing impaired are built on the assumption that English is the users native language and that the goal of the communication device should be to send the text of the conversation (TTYs, pagers, etc.). However, for many deaf people their first language is ASL (American Sign Language). For them communicating in English requires an awkward translation. ASL, unlike brail, is not simply a different encoding of English. The Grammatik structure of ASL, although as rich as English is different. These deaf individuals would prefer to communicate via there native language of ASL. We propose designing a communications device that is optimized for transmitting messages in sign language. Design a 3G communication system for independent deaf and/or blind persons. [oct 23]

To design a device using 3G technology that closes the emotional and informational gap among the differently-abled, as well as the public in general. To accomplish this task Team YoG will apply appropriate aesthetics for the senses, include optimum mobility, and connect the device to existing everyday technologies to optimize usefulness and compatibility. Week 11
Mon Nov 26- Sun DEC 2, 2001

Goals for this Week What we Accomplished

Begin assembling the final presentation.

Schedule another meeting with individuals from the School for the Deaf to video tape them running through our scenarios.

Produce Director presentation with interface animation and video side by side.

See A4 update

Watched the Bravo sign language training videos.

Interviewed and video taped two deaf people signing. Asked for feedback on the form and ASL realistic gestures. Summarized the video into short clips highlighting the gestures agreed upon.

Decided on device orientation, technical specifications, mechanism for screen extraction, and device stability. Began production of final prototype.

Due Dates
Tuesday DEC 4

Deliverables
Product Diagram, Functionality Flow, Product Opportunity Statement

Week 10
Mon Nov 19- Sun Nov 25, 2001

Goals for this Week What we Accomplished

Finalize YoG form and decide on physical buttons.

Detail user interface, look and feel, and color scheme.

Locate video of people signing.

Plan user testing of two blind individuals signing over a video link.

Consider opportunities and limitations in current materials.

Based on feedback from our A4 presentation we decided to narrow YoGs product focus to concentrate on Deaf users using ASL over video and to remove the keyboard. This has opened up a number of interesting new form concepts and simplified the product interaction.
