Under the heading of "Never Reinvent Wheels", Richard Pattis has put
together some web resources that are well put together and extremely helpful.
His course
handouts page has links that explain the nuts and bolts of installing
Java, working in 5419, using Windows and Macs, and a host of other stuff
that tends to plague even "advanced" students during the first days of a
course.
